Two of my favorite aphorisms: It is better to light one candle than sit in total darkness, and The only thing necessary for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing are the compass points that lead me to the stories of good people keeping evil at bay. And because life is a gift with obligations and reparation for those gifts is fundamental to meaning and joy, involving myself in the stories of those people fighting the good fight, and of the victims they serve, is one way for me to repay all the gifts I have been given.

A fight of particular interest to me, as you may have already guessed from my novels, is the one being waged against the oppressive and malevolent practices of polygamy and human trafficking.

Below you will find summaries and links to organizations working on behalf of the oppressed.

SOUND CHOICES COALITION

Kristyn Decker is one of those good people keeping evil at bay. Author of Fifty Years in Polygamy – Big Secrets and Little White Lies, she founded Sound Choices Coalition, an organization that works on behalf of polygamy’s victims. As the 12th child of her father’s 23 biological children, and with her mother the first of his 13 wives, Kristyn lived the oppression, sexual and psychological abuse that she now works to end.

With the recent indictments of polygamists for fraud and money-laundering, and the striking down of the Utah law that had decriminalized polygamy, Kristyn and others like her are making some headway. However, polygamist leaders believe that God has chosen them to populate the earth with their kind, and they are spreading their seeds in chilling numbers – often into girls barely out of puberty. Kristyn’s conservative estimate on the number of great-grandchildren her father sired is 1,400.

The most up-to-date information on polygamy issues is available on the Sound Choices Coalition Facebook page. To find out more about the Sound Choices Coalition organization, or to help with their goals, go to their website.

Kristyn’s book is available on Amazon.

HALF THE SKY MOVEMENT
P1030596

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide was my introduction to Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, two extraordinary forces for change. It opened my eyes to the irrefutable fact that if you improve the life of one woman, you improve the lives of her children, her family, her village, and the people of her country—whether in North America or East Africa. Watching their film strengthened my conviction in the boundless efforts of their organization—which is now a network of many dedicated partner organizations working diligently all over the globe. Talk about paying it forward!

The following is taken directly from the Half the Sky Movement website. I encourage you to explore it. With such a disproportionate amount of media coverage focused on the wicked in our world, it is inspiring and encouraging to read about the thousands of people dedicated to the greater good.

“The Half the Sky Movement is cutting across platforms to ignite the change needed to put an end to the oppression of women and girls worldwide, the defining issue of our time. Inspired by journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book of the same name, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide brings together video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools to not only raise awareness of women’s issues, but to also provide concrete steps to fight these problems and empower women.

Change is possible, and you can be part of the solution.”
